Best Season for Ghorepani PoonHill Trek

One of the first questions every trekker asks is: When should I go? The truth is, you can do the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek year-round, but spring and autumn are by far the most rewarding. Arriving in March and lasting up to May, the spring season brings the trail alive with rhododendrons in full bloom, painting the hillsides red, pink, and white. Besides, the weather also stays warm during the day, and the skies are usually clear enough for stunning sunrise views over the Annapurnas.

However, if you’re someone who loves crisp mountain air and crystal-clear panoramas, then September to November is perfect. This is the trekking high season, so you’ll meet lots of fellow hikers along the trail, and every sunrise feels extra magical.

Winter (December to February) brings quieter trails and a peaceful vibe, though you’ll need to be ready for chilly mornings and evenings. Monsoon (June to August) isn’t for everyone, as rain can make the paths slippery, but the upside is fewer crowds and the hills bursting with green.

Ghorepani PoonHill Trek Difficulty Level

The Ghorepani PoonHill Trek is one of the easiest trekking routes in Nepal, perfect for beginners and casual backpackers. Most days involve 4–6 hours of walking, with plenty of tea breaks, photo stops, and moments to catch your breath. So, one can complete this trail with basic preparation and fitness.

One thing that the beginner-level trekkers need to know is that climbing the 3000 stone steps in Ulleri can be the most difficult part of this trek. We recommend that you go slow, stop when needed, and turn it into a fun challenge. Other than that, there are no technical climbing skills needed, just a positive mindset and some preparation beforehand. If you can comfortably do long walks or short hikes at home, you’ll be more than ready for this adventure.

Ghorepani PoonHill Trek Food and Accommodation

Food and accommodation sit as two of the key factors to keep the trekkers healthy and active during the trek. With that in mind, the Himalayan Ice Cap team arranges the best of hotels and lodges that provide very healthy and hygienic food and accommodation throughout the Ghorepani PoonHill Trekking map. Also, here's a fun fact: teahouse culture sits as one of the most charming parts of this trek.

Talking about accommodation, we recommend the trekkers to forget fancy hotels and count on some simple but cozy mountain lodges run by local families. With basic rooms having twin beds, a wooden table, and warmth, these tea houses lack luxury but provide an abundance of experience. Also, these places have a common dining area where you can sit by the fire and make new friends.

Food on the trail is surprisingly varied and satisfying. Of course, you’ll find the Nepali staple dal bhat, a hearty plate of rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles that will keep you fuelled for hours. But you’ll also get options like fried rice, noodles, soups, curries, omelets, pancakes, and even pasta. Meals are cooked fresh and served hot, and you’ll quickly find your favorites. And let’s not forget the endless cups of tea, ginger, masala, and lemon that become part of your daily rhythm. Eating and sleeping in these teahouses isn’t just about comfort; it’s about being part of the local trekking tradition.

Ghorepani PoonHill Trek Transportation

Getting to the starting point of the Ghorepani PoonHill Trek itself is an adventure. What makes this journey adventurous? Well, it's the way we reach from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then to Nayapul. The drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara takes about 6–7 hours by tourist bus, or you can also go for a flight, which takes about 5 minutes. From Pokhara, we go for a 2-hour drive to Nayapul. While returning from the trek, we drive firstly from Ghandruk to Pokhara and then to Kathmandu.

One thing that all the trekkers can count on is the safety, security, and ease that the Himalayan Ice Cap ensures with the transportation we arrange. Whether it be the quality of the vehicles or the experience of the drivers, you can count on us for the best arrangements.

Other Facilities During the Ghorepani PoonHill Trek

You might be surprised at how many facilities are available along the trail despite being in the mountains. Most teahouses provide electricity and solar charging, so you can keep your phone or camera powered up (though charging may cost a small fee). In many villages, you’ll find WiFi connections, though speeds vary, and sometimes it’s better to just enjoy being offline.

Hot showers are usually available, often heated by solar power. They might not always be piping hot, but after a long day of trekking, even a lukewarm shower feels amazing. Small shops along the trail sell snacks, bottled water, and basic toiletries in case you forget something. ATMs are not common, so it’s best to carry enough cash from Pokhara. While facilities are simple, they’re more than enough to keep you comfortable and connected.

How to Prepare for the Ghorepani PoonHill Trek

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a short, beginner-friendly, and rewarding trekking journey. However, preparation always needs to be done before any journey. As mentioned, 6-7 hours of walking every day while also climbing on steep and stone stairs can be difficult at times.

Here are some simple but effective ways to get ready:

  • Work on Your Fitness: Start walking or hiking regularly, especially uphill or on stairs. This trek has a lot of stone steps, and your legs will thank you if you’ve trained them beforehand.
  • Practice With a Backpack: Carry a small pack during your walks to get used to trekking with a bit of weight. It makes a big difference on the trail.
  • Break in Your Shoes: Comfortable, well-broken-in trekking boots are a must. Nothing ruins a trek faster than painful blisters.
  • Pack Light and Smart: You don’t need a heavy bag for this trek. Bring layers for changing weather, but keep it minimal.
  • Stay Hydrated and Energised: Drink water often and keep some light snacks for energy boosts during steep climbs.
  • Take It at Your Own Pace: The trek isn’t about speed. Go steady, take breaks, and focus on enjoying the journey.

With this preparation, you’ll be more comfortable, more confident, and ready to enjoy the sunrise views from Poon Hill without feeling drained.

Ghorepani PoonHill Trek Packing List

Packing for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. As this is not a difficult or technical level trekking journey, you don't need huge duffels or technical climbing gear. However, it does pay off to be thoughtful with what you bring, because you’ll be carrying it up those famous stone staircases.

The key is to keep your bag light, practical, and filled only with items that make the journey more comfortable.

Here are some of the most important things that your backpack needs to have while ascending on the Ghorepani PoonHill Trek:

Clothing:

  • Lightweight trekking pants and shorts that dry quickly.
  • A mix of t-shirts and long-sleeve tops for layering and sun protection.
  • A warm fleece or down jacket, because evenings in the mountains can surprise you with the chill.
  • A waterproof jacket or poncho for those sudden Himalayan showers.
  • A hat for the sun, gloves for cooler mornings, and plenty of warm socks.

Footwear:

  • Strong trekking boots with ankle support, as they’ll be your best friend on the stairs.
  • Comfy shoes or sandals to relax in once you’re at your teahouse.

Gear & Accessories:

  • A backpack (20–30L) with a rain cover.
  • Trekking poles, if you like extra support (especially handy on steep steps).
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm to protect you from the high-altitude sun.
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder because staying hydrated is key.
  • Headlamps or flashlights are perfect for early morning hikes to Poon Hill.

Health & Personal Items:

  • A small first aid kit, blister pads included.
  • Any personal medications you can’t do without.
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, etc.).
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes for quick fresh-ups on the trail.

Optional but worth it:

  • A camera or phone for the sunrise magic at Poon Hill.
  • A lightweight towel for teahouse use.
  • Energy bars, nuts, or chocolates for a little trail motivation.

We recommend the trekkers not to overpack because every extra item adds weight to your steps, and when you’re climbing endless stairs, you’ll feel it. Make sure to pack light but include all the important items.

Don't miss out on the hotels, cafes, and restaurants to try different cuisines (both Nepali and international).

In the evening, we invite you to a welcome dinner with a cultural performance in the hotel. This is also the time when you meet your guides for the trek and discuss the journey with them.

Today marks the beginning of our journey towards the Annapurna region. As you wake up and have breakfast, our representatives will take you on a drive towards Pokhara via the Prithivi Highway. As we cover a small section of today's journey, we will start journeying through green hills and quiet terraced farmlands. Also, the road traces the curves of the Trishuli River, its turquoise waters rushing alongside as you pass through charming roadside towns and quiet villages. It takes about 6 to 7 hours for us to reach Pokhara by bus.

Arriving in Pokhara feels like stepping into a serene lakeside paradise. This city, situated under the shadow of Machapuchare (Fishtail Peak), is both relaxing and lively. In the evening, you can stroll along Lakeside, explore cozy cafés, or simply rest by the water and breathe in the mountain air

We will drive from Pokhara to Nayapul early in the morning, which takes about 2 hours. Not to mention, this section of the drive takes us through lush farmland, quaint villages, and the sparkling Modi River, giving you your first taste of rural Himalayan life. Upon arrival at Nayapul, your boots hit the trail, and the real adventure begins.

After a quick break in Nayapul, our representatives will lead you to a trail towards Ulleri. We walk past a challenging yet rewarding section of the Ghorepani PoonHill Trekking trail, which takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete. Also, the path leads us past little streams, stone-paved steps, and villages where kids wave and elders smile as you pass by. Besides, Ulleri's famous stone staircase also sits as another challenging part of today's trek.

As you reach Ulleri, you’ll feel a mix of tired legs and total satisfaction. This hillside village gives you your first true mountain lodge experience, with cozy teahouses and views that make the effort worth it. So, sit back with a warm meal, breathe in the crisp air, and know you’ve officially started your trek into the Annapurna region.

Another day calls for another adventurous day in the Ghorepani PoonHill Trekking trail. On the fourth day, we will leave Ulleri and ascend towards Ghorepani, a traditional village located at an altitude of 2850 meters above sea level. This part of the trek passes through dense rhododendron forests that glow red and pink in spring, with birdsong echoing through the trees. Besides, we will also catch amazing glimpses of the snow-covered peaks while walking beside the streams.

Ghorepani, a traditionally settled Gurung village, gives us the first sense of stepping into a Himalayan postcard. The village literally is the one that you see in photos, sitting right beneath a huge mountain and between the valleys. In the evening, we recommend the trekkers to enjoy the view of the peaks turning golden as the sun sets before having dinner.

Finally, we have reached the most important and highly awaited day of the entire Ghorepani Poonhill Trek. The trekkers need to wake up a little early today because we will go for an early morning hike to PoonHill viewpoint.

This short hike to PoonHill is something that remains in your brain and heart forever because the journey and the destination are both equally amazing and adventurous. From PoonHill viewpoint, we can enjoy a mesmerizing view of sunrise from beneath the sky-towering peaks. Moreover, the first light hitting Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, painting the sky in pinks and oranges, is another magical moment.

After enjoying one of the most beautiful sunrise views from PoonHill, we went for a walk to Tadapani. This village, located at an altitude of 2610 meters above sea level, will be our resting zone for the fifth day. The trail from PoonHill to Tadapani winds through forests alive with birds and the sound of rushing streams. Tadapani is quieter, nestled among trees, with some of the most intimate views of Machapuchare and Annapurna South

Ghandruk is another beautiful village in the Ghorepani PoonHill Trekking map. Located at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level, this village sits as one of the cultural highlights of the entire trek. Besides, Ghandruk also gives us a Gurung tradition-rich, peaceful, quieter & and vibrant vibes.

From your teahouse balcony, you’ll see Annapurna South and Machapuchare standing tall, almost close enough to touch. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.

After a freshening and adventurous trek to PoonHill Viewpoint, it's time for us to return. After having breakfast, our representatives will take you on a drive from Ghandruk to Pokhara, which takes about 3 hours. This short drive lets you witness some mesmerizing views of the surrounding environment, along with the fresh view of Phewa Lake.

However, if you have any plans to go for another adventure in Nepal, you can count on Himalayan Ice Cap for the arrangements.
